Short trip to Ste Boker in the Negev

Friday was the last day that the German Visitors were here and we scheduled a really fun, break-of dawn (6:45 am)  field trip to the Desert.  Beer Sheva is actually in the desert but the southern campus (Ste Boker)  is the epitome of the Negev.  Deep canyons , interesting geology, wild ibex and flash floods. Well flash floods are not common and only occur when the weather is awful, wet, and relentless.  Lucky for all of us we got flash floods and so could not enter the trail head to go for a 1-hour hike.  Actually we could barely get out of the car because of the howling winds, hail and 2 degree (that would be Celcius) air.  Sounds like Juneau weather except last I checked, its pretty warm there,  I did not sign on for this!

While the weather howled, we came upon some wild animals.  They did not seem to mind us or the weather.  Turns out the wild ibex are much like the deer roaming aroung CA.  Lots of them.  We walked around the site of Ben Gurion's (First Prime Minister of Israel) grave and park.

Because we couldn't go hiking, and because we had 3 hours before we had to get our friends to a taxi, Amit decided to bring us to one of these remote ranches in the desert that serve wine (from nearby wineries) and goat cheeses of many varieties.  It was 8:30 which is normally a bit early for me to start with the wine but I was game for getting indoors.  As you can see from the next picture, this was not a "standing room only" place.  It also was closed for business.  Will definitely come back here in March.
